Promise?

Promise?
You will still love me 50 years from now?
When I have cried more tears,
When I have been hurt
And my back is stout?

Promise?
you will still love me
When you've seen all my scars
When I am grieving and broken
And torn into two?

Promise.
You will remember me?
And who I am not useful
When my hair has turned from gold to gray
When the strands fall out and our brittle as rocks in the sand
When my skin is wasted and bruised

When I am weak
When my eyes can’t see
When I am not fruitful
When I am not lovely
When I don’t look like me?
Promise to love me?
When I am no longer joyous
When the world weighs too much on me and I sit among few?

Promise to love me
If I spill you my sins?
If I told you my secrets?
Would your love fade or dim?

Promise to love me?
When I don’t love me?
When I’m angry and hurting-
When I’m broken and mean.

Promise to love me?
When I curse and I swear?
When I weep and I punch?
And when I don’t care?

Promise to love me?
If I left you for gold?
For silver and riches?
For diamonds or mold?
Promise to love me?
When I’m mean or unkind?
When I’m grieving and broken?
And swear at the skies?

Promise to hear me?
When I am unheard?
If I hated you
If I left you
If I ran far away?
Promise to follow me?
When I walk away.

Would you leave me alone?
Or sit with me, stay?
Promise to love me?
When friends have all left.
When family is absent
And there are no more songs?
Promise to love me
If you knew all my wrongs?

Promise to love me?
So much that it hurts?
Promise to see me?
When I am blind, naked, and covered in grit and in dirt?

Would you love me?
Would you listen?
Would you follow me?
Forgive me?

Do you promise to love me?
The unlovely, the ugly, the broken, the empty?
Would you love me?
Would you love all of me?
If you knew me if you knew me?
How would you see me?
How would you judge me?

Could you love me?
Knowing the hurt?
Knowing my envies?
Seeing me at my worst?
Could you still love me?
Would you walk away?
Keep it simple:
Keep me at bay.

Will you walk with me in my heart ache?
Will you carry my burdens
When my feet are too heavy?
Would you love me in my brokenness?
Would you love me when I am dying inside?
If I didn’t love me?
Would you still see my beauty?
Or would you wish to be free.

Do you promise to love
If you knew all that I am?
Even when, despite, because, and regardless of
What I have done
Who I’ve been
Or what I could become?

Do you promise to love me
When the dusk falls and the dawn shines in?
Do you promise to love me?
Regardless of sin?
Do you promise to love me?
Even, if, and when.
